Hajah Salma obtained her first degree from the University of Kent in B.A. Accounting (Honours). She started her career as an Audit Trainee with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. Later, she joined Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and left as the Head of Operations for Corporate Banking Division.

She recieved two scholarships from SCB: Postgraduate Banking Program from the Management Institute of Singapore and a MBA degree from the Henley Management College, UK. Following this, she worked in the University of Brunei, Darussalam as a Senior Lecturer and also served as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies.

She was primarily responsible for the setting up and became the Director of the Islamic Banking, Finance and Management. She has presented numerous conference papers and edited various book. In 2009, she founded Crescent Sdn. Bhd. which provides online training in Islamic Banking and Finance. This company has recieved several accolades for its E-learning achievements.
